Josh Shaffner: Creating Cinematic Stories through Painting...
Josh Shaffner’s paintings allude to an Earth that has gone through a space-time warp. Simultaneously working on three bodies of work, Shaffner doesn’t just paint the world; he creates a world in which he encapsulates the transience of human beings and our existence on this Earth. His three bodies of work include paintings that are a mix of realism and surrealism, colorful abstract expressionists, and elaborate ink drawings on paper. Originally from Montana, Shaffner currently lives in Philadelphia, and he has a studio near Chinatown where he creates his work. He has also produced a stop-motion film titled The Offering, which is compiled from his series of oil paintings. It features original music composed by Shaffner and consists of over 4,000 photographs taken throughout the progression of each painting from his realism and surrealism-based series..........

The work you are doing now, making these paintings and turning them into videos, is the process in the painting or the video, or both? Or, I mean, does the final outcome even matter to you?
Definitely. But some how, although, I’m trying to work through something else. It’s like, figuring out how to use the medium in the moment, and not feeling like you planned something out and have to execute it. And this can be kind of arduous. That’s not what I’m looking for. Like, drawing is such a great process because it’s interesting the whole way through. You discover while you draw.
